One thing is the same with all strategy games, if you want to get an advantage over your opponent, you will have to plan your moves carefully. At first opponents were AI and not very clever, but with years multiplayer evolved and even AI got smarter. Our list consists of best strategy games of all times.
Command & Conquer Series
Command & Conquer is a good example of game evolution. First instalment was released 1995 and back it was not as hard to win any scenario. Building a sandbag wall around your base gave you a strong advantage. Enemy never went to destroy or run over sandbags. You had the perfect base defence and building a massive army was an easy task. Then once you were happy with the amount of soldiers and vehicles you produced, you would destroy an enemy and move on to the next level. Since then, several sequels had been developed. Tiberium series also had a good trick with Firestorm wall, which would draw a missile straight onto it, saving all your buildings. Although there was no easy way around defeating an enemy army. Generals series was the last one and the whole franchise is wroth playing. There is a free online game on EA.com called Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances.
Warhammer was created in 1983, and since then it inspired numerous video and tabletop games. Turn-based, real time, tactics and tabletop versions got a huge fan community. It is one of the best strategy games in the gaming history. The goal is always the same, defeat the opponent and their armies. Warhammer 40,000 is the best known title in the franchise and has several expansion which provides for weeks or good gaming experience. Developers done more than just creating a PC version of a famous tabletop game. Each race is well balanced with its own strengths and weaknesses. Fans of real-time strategy game will enjoy this one for sure.
The Settlers Series
First Settlers game was developed in 1993. Yet another title that stood the test of time. There are eight games in total and all were created by Blue Bytes Software. One thing all The Settlers games have in common is that they are real-time strategy titles. It is kind of city building combined with resource management, economy, construction and transport, and military elements. You will most likely enjoy earlier instalments more than The Settlers 7. The Settlers Online is a free to play game, which got mostly positive feedback. If you are into real-time strategy, then this franchise will have you addicted.
Turn-based strategy game series where you have to choose a Civilization to guide in a mission to conquer the world. Research new technologies, develop an army and rule the world. You can achieve that by either war or diplomacy. The game features some of the greatest leaders in a history and you will have to use the best strategy to win the race. Choose your civilization and shape its culture, economic structure, defences and military. The latest instalment, Civilization V might the most complex strategy game ever created. Strategy fans tend to replay Civ V over and over, so be warned as the addiction can be developed in no time.
The Sims Series
Strategy simulation of life, The Sims, is the best-selling PC game ever. The series will continue this year with The Sims 4. What is so good about The Sims? You are one of them and you have to manage daily tasks of person’s life. Learn new skills such as cooking, go to work, sleep, socialize and do anything else a real life human does every day. Then you might go for a partner and ask them to move in with you. Oh and if that is not enough, try having a child. From nappy changing, over potty training to educating your child. Balancing all of these tasks can be tricky as there is only a specific amount of time give in each day, but that’s the fun with The Sims. It is the life simulation which will give you many hours of fun.
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes is a real-time strategy set during World War II. Player gets to command two U.S. military units in the Battle of Normandy and the Allied liberation of France. The games with the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and goes through several World War II battles. It was critically acclaimed for its innovative game engine and concept, which brought dynamic battlefields to life and completely destructible environments. With cunning AI, even more cunning then Baldrick, no battle can be won in a straightforward way. One of the best tactical RTS titles out there.
Heroes of Might & Magic Series
Turn-based tactical game set in a fantasy world where players control armies of mythical creatures. Exploring the map, finding artefacts, building and upgrading structures in your towns and defeating enemy players means a lot of fun. Begin with one town and small army and work your way to conquering each level. Good tactic in Heroes of Might & Magic is not about building every available structure or deploying tons of strongest available creatures. Each level plays different, and each instalment in the game series brings new races and features. It is a tactical game and sometimes the only way to win the game is to go after an enemy as soon as possible. The latest title in the series, Heroes of Might & Magic VI, offers a multiplayer received mostly positive feedback, though I would recommend earlier ones.
StarCraft 2 is the most played strategy online game, or at least it should be. Although single-player mode is just as good. Set in a science-fiction world, player has to choose between three races, Terrans, Zerg and Protos and develop a strategy to be the last one standing on a map. Jim Raynor is back once again and that means you, as a player, will take control of famous character. Raise structures, build armies and dominate the universe of StarCraft 2, and if you need more action try at least one of the expansions. Critically acclaimed for all of its elements.
Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2
Build and manage your dungeon, or Lair, defend it from invading monsters and do whatever it takes to keep your home safe. Replaying Dungeon Keeper Gold, few weeks ago, was as much fun as it was all those years ago. At start you are given the Dungeon Heart and have to build new rooms, mine resources and develop advanced features to be able to protect your Lair. Dungeon Keeper is one of a kind strategy game, which was attempted to be recreated for mobile devices and that did not go so well. If you like a true strategy games than stick with PC version.
Age of Empires II
Age of Empires II is a real-time strategy with focus on town building, resource gathering, creation of armies and defeating the opponent of course. Players have to advance one of 13 civilization featured in a game through four different Ages, the Dark Age, the Feudal Age, the Castle Age and the Imperial Age. Each new Age unlocks new structures, technologies and units, though player has to build certain buildings from the current age pay enough resources to advance to the next one. It has all elements of a good strategy game and HD version was released recently. I would recommend playing the standard one first to be able to appreciate the HD in all its light and glory.
It all began with the legendary UFO: Enemy Unknown strategy video game in 1994. Ever since, the game got huge number of players addicted and that resulted with a reboot known as XCOM. Mysterious alien invasion began in 1999, at that time it was still a future, and a coalition of funding nations created an elite paramilitary organization codenamed X-COM, Extraterrestrial Combat Unit. The player leads this secret force as it is the last hope of humankind. Later instalments took place underwater and in a large futuristic city, but the Enemy Unknown is the most popular one in the series. Turn-based strategy gameplay never felt as good as with UFO: Enemy Unknown.
Total War: Rome II
Unlike its predecessor, Total War: Rome II portrays each culture of the classical era as accurately as possible. Starting in 272BC, the grand campaign lasts for 300 years, though it is possible to play it further. Form an army and choose a general from a list of available faction members, then work your way to win the war. The game features stunning attention to details, amazing cinematic and generally good gameplay. One of the rare new strategy games that stands out from the crowd is seriously worth playing.
