It’s a Holiday Season and farmers have a chance to help those less fortunate by raising food. To do so, players have to purchase a new farm in FarmVille game. This farm is called Holiday Lights and would light up their virtual homestead with Christmas decorations.
The feature became available 20 days ago, and up to today farmers have raised more than $1 million for hunger relief charities. Zynga admitted they were expecting something around $500,000 to be raised and that goal was reached within seven days. Encouraged by the amount of funds being raised, the company set a new goal to $1 million.
Money that has been raised by FarmVille players will be enough to deliver 9 million meals to those in need.
Zynga said 60% of FarmVille players have contributed to charities through FarmVille. This was not the first time company was raising money to help various charities and FarmVille’s next goal is to help fight hunger worldwide.
FarmVille game has been released in 2009, and so far its players raised over $7 million for charities. Some of its loyal players gave statement about what makes them donate money and continue playing the game.
"It's not like I can give on a monthly basis, so when they do these charities I try to help because that's my way to pay it forward," said Wilson, a player from Texas. "I've been helped: I'm very low income, I'm on social security."
We may say what we want about Zynga and its games, but they do good things like charity often. If they introduced charity to other games developed by the company we could all help others and put smiles on faces of those who are less fortunate.
