Coders give us awesome video games that we can enjoy. Living with one of them might not be so enjoyable if you don't know what to expect. We asked Pauline to explain what it is like to live with a game coder.
Don't forget to like us on FACEBOOK, thanks so much!
Coding is extremely popular lately, with new video games being released every day. There is a lot of time and effort involved to developed every single game. As with every other industry, if you don't give 100% of you what you have, the end result won't be successful. Pauline lives with a game coder for many years and was kind enough to tell us few things about what it is like.
RX6: Hello can you please introduce yourself and tell us something about your life partner?
HI my name is Pauline and I am married to a coder for 17 years now. He codes computer games for a living.
RX6: How did you meet a coder, we thought they live in a cellar?
I met him when he was studying for his Ph.D. at university. He was my lodger in fact. It was so funny, he used to dress really smartly, always in a jeans, shirt and jacket. He was very quiet and no bother at all as a lodger.
RX6: What does it take to get coders attention once you two have been together for a while?
Well after you have been together for a while there are only 2 ways to get a coders attention 1 is to sit between him and his computer completely naked, although that is not guaranteed to work, you may well find him peering around you to see his screen and reaching past you to get to his keyboard. The only guaranteed way to get his attention is to hit him on the back of the head with a mallet. ps: this may still take some time to register but rarely more than an hour.
RX6: Does he even hears what you’re trying to say, or is he completely glued to his screen trying to figure out where the coding error occurred?
Does he even hear me when I speak, well let me give you an example:
Me: Darling we need to leave 15 minutes early tomorrow as I have a doctors appointment.
Him: OK no problem
2 hours later...
Him: Sorry did you say something?
Me: thinking hard... ohh Yes dear, I said we need to leave early tomorrow as I have a Dr's appointment.
Him: OK no problem
The next morning... I am ready to leave and he is still in the bathroom
Me: Darling will you please hurry up I am going to be late
Him: Late for what?
Me: My doctors appointment
Him: Why didn't you tell me?
RX6: If you, for an example, scream that you need help how will your game coder respond?
If I scream? Two hours later he will ask me if I wanted something lol.
RX6: I understand that coding is a very business and takes one’s attention fully. What happens if you hear a coder talk and ask to tell you what he said?
I will ask him what he is talking about and if I get a reply at all it's usually that he was talking to himself.
RX6: Is there any chance to get a response from a coder about anything that doesn't involve his code?
There is every chance of getting a response from a coder about things other than code, trouble is he will have no idea he has given it. Thus I am frequently told off for not telling him anything.
RX6: Being a coder isn't an easy task, do you have any tips for other humans who are trying to cope with coders in their life?
If you are contemplating the insanity of having a coder in your life I recommend you get a recorder and record all conversations you have with them. You must also have the patience of a saint and be prepared to fight for his attention every once in a while.
RX6: But it is not all that bad is it, as we can ask a coder in our life to agree with whatever we want and they won’t even know they said yes. Did you ever use this tactic?
Yes of course I use this tactic all the time, thus the recorder I can prove to him he said yes.
RX6: You obviously love what your coder does otherwise you would be gone ages ago. Can you tell us how do you put up with rattyness caused by coding errors?
I have learned to tune out his rattyness and just say yes dear, no dear and hope I get them in the right place.
RX6: Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Living with a coder is difficult in the extreme, before contemplating making a permanent arrangement with one make sure you really, really love them, and stop stressing about things, don't plan anything that involves them, there is bound to be some deadline which means you end up at family weddings, friends birthdays and other social events on your own. Most coders prefer their own company 90% of the time anyway.
