Don't forget to like us on FACEBOOK, thanks so much!
The trademark on word Candy caused a lot of grief for developers and gamers alike. When King.com, publisher of Candy Crush Saga started filing in trademarks on common English word, with Candy being their most important one, everyone thought they had enough money to fight those who oppose it. The Internet users proved that you don’t have to be rich to fight for what you think is fair.
Many developers had their games affected by this farce, with The Banner Saga being the most known title. Although developer of CandySwipe was unknown to the public, his open letter to King.com caused an outrage. We also have to mention Scamperghost and its indie developer who revealed King.com publisher’s bad practice of cloning games. Though we all knew how Candy crush Saga was a clone of Bejeweled match-3 game.
There were many games created just to mock the trademark, by adding the word into titles. We’ve seen Candy Jam and finally IGDA’s statement on the whole fiasco. King has filed to abandon the trademark for reasons that are clear to everyone. Users found out what was going on and started to fight back. Sometimes, companies forget they exist only thanks to their users and without users they would be nothing.
It is still unclear whether the trademark on word Candy will remain in countries outside the US and what will happen with trademark regarding the word Saga. According to IGN, this does not affect King’s E.U. trademark for Candy and publisher will continue to protect their IP. If users have to continue to fight the trademark to get is abandoned in all world countries or will King finally admit they were wrong and withdraw all their trademark applications on common English words? there are numerous games like Candy Crush Saga out there.
