Former Microsoft Studios employees Patrick Loughman and Elbert Perez have tweeted that they got laid off from the company. It is not clear how many people will suffer from this round layoffs as Microsoft hasn’t announced the news so far. Top developers who worked at the company will surely find a new place to work. Elbert Perez has announced their Kickstarter campaign for the project Habitat, the physics-driven strategy game set in Earth’s far future. That’s at least one ex-employee with a good plan for the future.
Microsoft spokesperson issued a following statement, regarding layoffs "At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of our commitment to this goal, we are always evaluating our development priorities, and there are times when decisions need to be made to realign plans and refocus our efforts." Adding that "Microsoft Studios continues to grow as an overall organization as we focus and invest in key priority areas that will drive future profitable growth."
Few days ago, March Phil Spencer who has managed Microsoft Studios for nearly five years has been promoted as head of Xbox. "I will now be leading the Xbox, Xbox Live, and creative teams including Xbox Music, Xbox Video and Microsoft Studios as we deliver the next generation of games and entertainment," Spencer said. Combining these teams will strengthen the connection between some of the world's most innovative creators and those building the Xbox itself."
Other big companies had faced layoffs this year, though that does not mean that the video game industry is going down the road. New games arrive every day and to stay competitive, companies have to make difficult decisions. We wish all the best to those who have been affected with the layoffs.
