Among many other things, video games have always been blamed for piling up weight. It is general belief that gamers are fat and lazy, but scientist have proved us wrong. Diet, that famous word that is always related to some weight-loss products, and anything else that looks like an easy way to lose some weight, can be really frustrating. How many times have you started a diet only to find out you just wanted to eat all that food that you were forbidden? With the latest research, losing weight is not that hard or complicated at all.
The only true diet is to change your eating habits and video games can help with that. Having a balanced diet and working out is still a good way to lose weight, though most of us cannot be bothered to do that. Now, the good news is that a study which was recently conducted, found that playing video game for three minutes a day can reduce food cravings up to 24%. Images make us crave for food and if we can reduce the image intrusions, our cravings should decrease.
Psychologists from Plymouth University, Jessica Skorka-Brown, Jackie Andrade and Jon May started an experiment involving two groups of people playing Tetris. One group played the game for three minutes, while the other never got to play at all. Instead, they were sat in front of a screen waiting for a computer game to load. They were told it would load, but it was designed not to.
Before the experiment started, both groups experienced similar levels of cravings. The group who did play Tetris had significantly lower cravings and much less vivid craving imagery. The results suggested that players ware too distracted to think about food, and anyone who plays video games would agree with that.
The study supports Elaborated Intrusion theory that says our cravings are the result of visual imagery that breach our brains. Furthermore, the findings show that cravings can be studied in the laboratory without using craving induction procedures.
Going to a gym would still be required as playing video games won’t get you in shape. Although it will reduce food desire and make you eat less. Unless you play game that is full of food, like Cooking Mama or Cooking Academy. We have another myth regarding gamers busted, along with that one which blames our favourite entertainment media for violence. Lately, more and more benefits of playing video games have been proven.
