PlayStation 4 has seen successful launch worldwide, both commercially and financially. Being critically acclaimed as the ultimate next-gen console in performance and demand, got hackers’ attention on it.
PSN online service for Sony product users has its flaws like every other service on the Internet. PSN was under heavy fire when hackers managed to compromise the security, resulting in stolen credit card numbers and data. Sony reacted and tried to fix this issue as soon as possible, while at the same time offering protection to its customers whose accounts have been hacked.
One of the PSN users woke up yesterday to see an unauthorized transactions from his account, and that account had credit card linked to it. He reported on PlayStation’s Official Support Forums that he received confirmation emails about purchases of wallet points for FIFA. Altogether, user received 5 confirmation emails made at 5am when he was fast asleep.
He was confused, not even knowing what FIFA points were. Spiritualized_80 also asks whether IP and Locations are being tracked in online purchases. This data can easily be tracked and extracted from any online purchase. In an attempt to try and get his money back, user phoned his bank and they told him that transactions haven’t been fully cleared so they aren't able to file a fraud claim.
Spiritualized_80 then phoned Sony support who told him that they will lock his account. Now this is really not a good customer support decision. Whether the account in question would be locked just for an investigation, or permanently, this poor guy who already got his money stolen isn't even able to use his purchased games. We are almost sure he will get an account back after investigation has been completed. How long does it take to check an IP? Minutes, even in our own system it can be done within few minutes, and I am sure Sony has much better tools to do this.
Remember how Sony promised its PSN Service will get better and much more secure after PlayStation 4 was released? We can’t see what really got better. To play online multiplayer games you now need a PS+ subscription which according to Sony would help to invest in better security and better performance. PSN service itself has been constantly going under maintenance, ever since the launch of PS4. This could mean there are big loopholes which leave doors wide open for hackers.
Spiritualized_80 learnt his lesson in a hard way, but he said no way he will link another credit card to an online service. This is the best way to secure your account. I am not sure whether linking a credit card to PSN is optional, but you should never store any info of your credit card online. To secure an account even more, use strong passwords combination of lower and capital letters, numbers, and special characters. For example, i43AM*!a£ is a strong password. Do not use the one I gave in an example, and never store passwords anywhere except on a paper.
PSN is just one of the services that is under constant hackers’ attempt, no matter which service or online shop you use, never ever store credit card information. Yes it is a pain to type details over and over again with every single purchase, but it is nowhere near as painful as getting your credit card abused.
