For last few days Rust game servers have been under DDoS attack causing problems for developer and players alike. Server connectivity issues along with headaches is what you can expect from DDoS attacks.

Facepunch Studios announced they had server connectivity issues few days ago. Turned out it was caused by DDoS attack on uLink game servers. Rust is not even fully released yet. It can be purchased through Steam Early Access, but developers said the game is still in early alpha stage.
Rust is a survival game inspired by those like DayZ and Stalker. Although the game is said to be all about surviving, by managing thirst, hunger and cold, no one thought it will be about surviving the DDoS attack. Protect yourself from other players wasn't meant to be this way.
Two days ago, Garry Newman posted about the game servers receiving DDoS attacks. According to Garry these were not usual type where attacker just keeps sending tons of traffic to a server until it can’t take any more traffic, resulting in server connectivity failure. This time DDoS attacks seemed to periodically grab the server list and attack occupied servers with a number of empty packets.
At that same post, Garry seemed to be holding uLink responsible, stating how they informed uLink of exploit and issues. Each time they got the same response saying the issue will be fixed sometime in the future. Being pessimistic, Garry though uLink won’t be able to help with DDoS attacks on Rust servers.
Yesterday’s post said that they were working directly with the uLink to solve the issue. How about that, the servers are being stabilized today. Little optimist never killed anyone, but I understand how frustrating it is to be under DDoS attack.
Good news is that servers are coming back, with little more patience players will be able to enjoy their survival game Rust as if nothing ever happened. Hopefully they added better security measures to their servers, to prevent future attacks.
