You might have guessed that DayZ is all about surviving and killing zombies. Shocking to see a zombie killing game, but DayZ is breaking records even though it’s still in alpha stage.

Killing zombies in an open world survival game seems to be on high demand. DayZ Standalone alpha already sold over 172,000 copies in first 24 hours since it was released on Steam early access. T peak time up to 200 gamers were signing in to the DayZ alpha, according to Dean Hall, game’s director.
“DayZ Early Access is your chance to experience DayZ as it evolves throughout its development process," states the game's description. "Be aware that our Early Access offer is a representation of our core pillars, and the framework we have created around them. It is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle.”
This means that game has bugs and there’s still a lot of work to be done. DayZ has already been delayed for long, but mostly due to the new server/client architecture that is built on. The game will features locational damage, gear deterioration, and a brand new inventory system.
Set in an open world map of post-soviet state which has been infested by zombies. It has to be zombies, video game wouldn't be good without those ugly creatures. Seriously they aren't even scary anymore, we've seen so many that humans scare us more than infected version.
You are one of the few survivors in a game, well more than a few if you look at game’s selling figures, but you still have to search this in-game world to be able to fight for your life. You can do so by either going solo or teaming up with friends. Won’t be hard to find a player or two to team up with. As seen in other zombie survival titles, we will have to use any means available. Moral decisions might not be as hard this time.
I am failing to see why these games are so popular. It’s like playing one same game over and over again. Yes, some of the titles will have different architecture, but they are all about killing zombies. Some might say they are perfect foe, what happened to other enemies like aliens? At least with aliens we get to see new races that look different.
What about demons, spies, agencies that spy on us and so on, or good plain war games with humans? How many more zombie games we have to see before we can get another popular genre?
This is just my opinion, but zombie games are swarming us because devs don’t have to tinker on game concept. Coding it all could be hard, although most zombie survivals seem like a copy of one of the other game.
DayZ might sound promising, but it’s still in alpha and already selling at $29.99? Players are actually paying to be testers and help developers sort out bugs. This is a famous concept started on Steam Early Access. Does this seem wrong to you as well?
