The planned closure of the Free Realms, Wizardry Online, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Clone Wars Adventures has now been confirmed by John Smedley of SOE. According to John, not enough players are interested in these titles to justify the upkeep. Vanguard had been running at a loos for a while now, though SOE didn’t have the heart to tell its players. The company has decided to close the four MMOs and concentrate on the new ones.
Free Realms will come to an end as SOE doesn’t want child-focused titles anymore. "No more kids games," Smedley stated. "Kids don't spend well and it's very difficult to run a kids game. Turns out kids do mean stuff to each other a lot." That been said, Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventure will close at the end of March. Wizardry Online and Vanguard will continue to live until end of July 2014.
After giving some bad news to gamers, Smedley announced few good ones. "Yes, we will absolutely be bringing EverQuest Next to the Playstation 4!" adding that "if you like [Ultima Online], you're going to love EQN". Sounds good and reasonable.
His Reddit thread has some other info as well, such as Planetside 2 on PlayStation 4 should be released in the first half of 2014, and The Player Studio tool is apparently arriving in the UK in April. An announced MMO is in development, something that Star Wars Galaxies fans should be interested in. Although this MMO is “completely new IP”.
"Actually after seeing what Blizzard did with Hearthstone it's given us some other ideas..." Smedley teased. "LON is an awesome card game. We can take that to the next level."
The legendary EverQuest 1 and 2 will get new expansions pretty soon. "I've just seen the content update plan for EQ," wrote Smedley. "We heard the players loud and clear that they want a bigger expansion next time, and they'll get it. We'll be making EQ and EQ2 expansions for a long time to come. "
Along with the All Access plan that was announced earlier, with $14.99 subscription a month to access all SOE games, and the new titles on the horizon, PlayStation 4 owners has something to look forward to this year. Looks like SOE’s main focus is on new MMOs at the moment.
