Speed runners had to play continuously in order to collect donations for the Prevent Cancer Foundations, a non-profit organization that aims to save lives through cancer research, education and community outreach.
The goal was set at $500,000, but the number raised above $1 million by the end of the event. More than 27,000 donations were made by more than 18,000 donors. Viewers could enjoy watching some of the world’s top speedrunners who gathered to complete 155 games in record-breaking times.
The marathon included some well-known games such as Portal, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario 64 and Skyrim. Seeing how fast these games were completed was amazing. Especially the runs that involved four of the best Super Metroid speedrunners all playing against each other in one room. This run earned around $70,000. You can see all the runs in this video. Over 40 million views already just shows how famous the event was. Sadly media coverage hasn’t been good so far.
Gamers as a community continuously prove to be great people by doing awesome things and it most often includes raising money for the charity. Less than a year ago, Speed Demo Archive broke the record for the most money raised in a gaming charity marathon by getting a total of $448,423.27. Although it seemed like this year’s event won’t reach the fundraising goal, the last few days more and more viewers started joining in and topped the donations to a staggering amount.
Their success is spreading with lightning speed and we can look forward to the future gaming events that will raise money for various charities. All stats regarding the Awesome Games Done Quick.
