Researchers who studied a behaviour of more than 10,000 gamers, with focus on massively multiplayer online role-playing gamins, such as World of Warcraft and EVE Online, released the results which states that online gaming augments players’ social life.
They have travelled to more than 20 public gaming events in the UK and Canada that ranged from 20-player events up to 2500-player competitions. By observing thousands of gamers in these centres, the researchers have conducted a detailed survey with 378 players. They were interested in tracking the online and offline behaviour of gamers, with a focus on the communication.
“We found that gamers were often exhibiting many social behaviors at once: watching games, talking, drinking, and chatting online,” Taylor says. “Gaming didn’t eliminate social interaction, it supplemented it.
“This was true regardless of which games players were playing, and whether a player’s behavior in the online game was altruistic. For example, a player could be utterly ruthless in the game and still socialize normally offline.”
After conducting an in-depth research on how gamers interact with their online and offline worlds, they came to the conclusion that:
"Gamers aren't the antisocial basement-dwellers we see in pop culture stereotypes; they're highly social people," Dr. Nick Taylor, an assistant professor of communication at NC State and lead author of the study, said in a school news release. "This won't be a surprise to the gaming community, but it's worth telling everyone else. Loners are the outliers in gaming, not the norm."
No one in gaming world will be surprised seeing these results, though it is worth mentioning to others in your life who don’t play online video games. If they need more reasons to play video games, there are plenty such as improving brain activity.
