The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 2 picks up on the event where the first title ended. Many things have been improved and it plays like a completely new game, not just a sequel.

It has been merely a year since we've got to play The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and some said that Neocore is rushing things with the sequel. Well, apart from few bugs that are still in the game, everything else is a real fun. The Action RPG video game, developed by Neocore, is based on Bram Stoker’s novel, and once again you will assume the role of Van Helsing’s son who wants to continue his father’s work on defeating the evil. In the novel, main protagonist fought count Dracula and other monsters, and game certainly doesn't lack of monsters.
The story takes you in Borgovia, a fantasy land where science and magic do not exclude each other. In fact, the mad scientist has spawned hordes of evil creatures in an attempt to rule the world. Van Helsing defeated this enemy in the first part, but new ones have come out to the light. Fortunately you are not alone on this quest as Lady Katarina, a faithful ghostly companion, will be there on every step to help you fight off enemies.
If you have played the first part you will be able to import your character from there. Otherwise you start fresh and get to choose between six classes, including The Blade, The Spellkeeper, The Gunslinger, The Bombardier, The Adeptus and The Contraptionist. Each has its advantages and you can improve it by adding skills when you level up. There are 60 levels to gain, plenty of opportunity to evolve your skill tree. It has all been improved a lot, but that was expected considering the Coretech 3D Engine which was used to build a game.
Your adventure starts with a task of defending the city. This is one aspect I didn’t like much, since it was very much tower defence combat. There was plenty of loot to collect after battles and if you like your loot, set the game so that enemies can respawn. This way you can just run around on the first map and fight enemies over and over again until you are happy with items in your inventory.
You can also upgrade various items in Hunter’s Lair, Van Helsing’s secret hideout which can be used for various things such as trading, sending out squads and so on. The best part of the hideout is your new pet Chimera that can be used as a weapon in combat, or you can send it to collect gold and rare items within the Ink. While in the hub, you get to select main and side quests. I would recommend playing all available ones to get as many hours as you can. Once you have completed the main quest there is no much reason to continue with Van Helsing 2.
Being a leader of the Resistance has its advantages, especially when you can send squads to do your dirty work. Although you will have to go to battles and slay monsters. They come in hordes, all various evil beings trying to get you. Each type of monster is distinct, with different shape and size to start with. The look of enemies and fights just shows how much time had been put into ensuring that every detail fits in the storyline as perfect as it should.
Staying alive wasn't that hard while playing on normal level. On top of that respawn could be done for cheap. Combat is one of the stunning visual effects in The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 2, with the other one been wilderness. I was exploring various areas, enjoying the view and eagerly moving forward to see what lies ahead. The story will take you to all kind of different maps and Lady Katarina will follow, adding her own funny thoughts whenever she gets a chance.
Van Helsing 2 isn't just another hack’n’slash title, it has a well-developed micromanagement aspect. You can spend quite a bit of time in the Hunter’s Lair, doing this or that, before going on the next mission.
I was expecting little more from a video game based on Bram Stoker’s novel, and I am sure The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 2 will be even more fun once developers iron out bugs. I wouldn't call this game epic, but I would also not say that it is Diablo clone. With the unique story which we’ve never seen in a game so far, and unique characters, Van Helsing 2 will provide a lot of quality gameplay to gamers who love RPG and good humour. Just check on the Steam forums to see if the major bugs have been fixed before you decide to go for it.
