I finally got my hands on the Mims Beginning Beta last night. These cute aliens are lovely, even when they scream. As their God I just couldn't leave them undefended.

The Mims were flying through the galaxy in a search of a new world to colonize when their spaceship got destroyed. Floating in the escape pods, which are actually bubbles, these cute aliens landed on floating islands. They’re hopeless, aliens with PSI Power and other awesome skills such as telepathy are not very bright. You have to guide them and give orders for every single task. Although that makes them even cuter. They rely on you for everything, you are their God after all.
Biomass is crucial for building, researching, creating and everything else regarding the Mims. Now to get Biomass you will need yellow Bio-fruit that looks awfully similar to banana. Having flora that produces fruit isn't enough, therefor build the Extractor and a Silo. Your minions will start collecting fruit. Another thing they’re useful for is building different structures. PSI Tower is the first one that needs to be built. Gather fruit, build tower, do this do that and aliens will get tired. They will slow down and have a sad face above their head when they’re tired.
To refresh replenish their health and energy, you can either use Psi Power or build them a house. At first I thought that girly Mim was just so demanding, as girls usually are, when she asked for a house but she was right. House gives screaming aliens a place to go to when they need a rest. Much more efficient than using Psi Power all the time.
Space farming business involves more than just building weird looking plants that produce fruit. Animals have to be researched and created. They use fruit for food, but once an animal becomes an adult you can sell them for blue gems. BioLab is the structure to research and create animals and fruit. Each animal eats different type of food and can be sold for a specific amount of blue gems.
My first animal was an alien chicken and it grew to an adult pretty fast. Time to send it to the market and get some gems. Chicken goes to outer space, Fragli said it will probably become a soup. Yes, your Mims have names and personalities. Some are kind, though sarcasm makes them more entertaining.
So, you have few fruit producing flora and some animals that have to be raised and traded in. Simple enough, but danger lurks in the space. Fruit will attract pests, while animals attract predators. Psi powers such as fire and blast can be used to defeat enemies, though training Mim worker into a Guardian is a better way. Guardians will repel enemies, keeping your colony safe. There are plenty more structures and other things in this space farming simulation game.
One of the most interesting technologies is future prediction. It will warn you of an upcoming disaster and enemies. Try to research that one as soon as possible to be ready for disasters such as meteor showers and land quakes. Lots of structure and flora is needed, be careful where you place those as space can be scarce. See, colonizing the islands is fun, just keep in mind the ultimate goal is to repair the spaceship. Work toward the objectives and you are guaranteed to have a laugh along the way.
The Mims graphics are cartoony and unique. Tentacles on top of their head with each having some kind of an eye, and big mouth to scream loudly. They just love to scream whenever something isn't the way they want it to be. Everything in a game has been crafted in a gorgeous way. From creature to building, you will find the Mims to be one of the best indie games of the year 2014. Speaking of screaming aliens, game has a nice and catchy soundtrack accompanied by good audio effects. Singing Mim is just as lovely as the screaming one.
The only thing I didn't like as much was controls. It can be hard at times to see where an event has occurred if you don’t zoom out enough. It took me a while to get used to this type of the controls. This is the Beta version so some things are expected not to work as they should. Although it is much more playable than most other Betas I tried recently.
Squatting Penguins team done an amazing job with The Mims: Beginning. Studio, based in Poland, began work on the game 18 months ago. They finally released Beta for the supporters, but I asked one of the devs nicely and they gave me access to it. Just have to love this guys, they’re great developers, who worked hard to make their dream come true. I would recommend this game for everyone who likes simulation done in a funny way.
