The Sims 2 – 20 million copies sold
Life simulation strategy developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts (EA). This is literary a life simulation game where you get to direct lives of your Sims and control their every action. It’s a fun game to play, but don’t get too addicted to it. Teach them various skills which will help them get promoted on a job. I remember trying to teach my Sim to cook and he sat the kitchen on fire lol. Your Sim can meet friends and if relationship evolves they’ll become partners, get married, have babies, and so on. It’s not easy though, as you still have to sleep to refill energy and baby will just keep crying waking you up in the middle of a night. You can also take your Sims to various areas such as shopping or park. Will they have a long and happy life, or end up being broke and alone, it’s entirely up to you.
The Sims - 16 million copies sold
This was the first Sims game in series of course. What a joy it was to control your very own little people in a game. Getting them a job, building and decorating houses, and teaching them skills. It did require some time to earn enough money for all cool things I wanted so that kept me going. The only problem with a game was that there was no definite goal, although it did take weeks to teach my first Sim all things needed for highest job position, and to earn enough money for awesome house.
Minecraft 12.7 - million copies sold
One of the best sandbox Indie games ever. Players get to explore, craft, gather resources, combat, and the best of all they can build constructions out of textured cubes. Seriously this game is well worth trying. The game received several awards such as Best Downloadable Game award, and the Innovation Award. Like Sims, Minecraft doesn't have specific goal either, but that seems to be highly popular among gamers if we judge by the number of copies these games sold.
Diablo III - 12 million
The best-selling online game has been developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Diablo III sold over 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours wow. The game is set in a dark fantasy world Sanctuary, twenty years after the events of Diablo II. Players get to choose from five character classes being Wizard, Monk, Demon Hunter, Witch Doctor, and Barbarian. Each class has its own set of abilities. Choose your hero’s class and fight towards the ultimate goal of defeating Diablo, the Lord of Terror himself. The downside is that Diablo III doesn't have offline mode.
Half-Life 2 - 12 million copies sold
First person shooter developed by Valve Corporation, same guys that own Steam. Players get to control Gordon Freeman once again, fighting various enemies by using different tactics. The game has almost the same mechanics as Half-Life except newer source engine and somewhat improved graphics, but it comes with lots of new features. If you like first person shooter games then you will enjoy Half-Life 2.
Battlefield 2 - 11 million copies sold
In Battlefield 2 players get to choose which military superpower they will fight for - the United States, the Middles East Coalition, or the Chinese. The sequel brought Battlefield series into the modern era, featuring super modern weaponry, latest technologically advanced weapons and vehicles. The game offers 30+ vehicles, take control of them and engage in epic battles with over 64 players. I wonder whether Battlefield 4 will beat this record of 11 million copies sold.
Starcraft - 11 million
Another one of Blizzard’s games that hit the charts. It has been 15 years since Starcraft release and the game is still holding on the charts. Science fiction real-time strategy game where players choose from three species: the Terrans – an exiled humans from Earth, the Zerg – insect-like aliens that like to assimilate, and the Protoss – a humanoid species with psionic abilities and advanced technology. The game is legendary, it was my first game and I can play it over and over again.
The Sims 3 - 10 million
Ok, so it’s another one of those Sims games. Yes, you already know that it is the life simulation game where you get to control your own Sims and choose how they’ll live their lives. The main difference between the Sims 2 and the Sims 3 game is an enhanced goals and ambition system, and revamped life-goal system built around lifetime wishes. Now if you master the system you might even get superhuman powers like an awesome “iron bladder” ability to never have to go to bathroom again lol. The Sims 3 has several new features including an improved customization and editing character tools, tweaked buy and build modes, new public events and so on. All three The Sims games are in top 10, so might be fun to try the latest sequel and see how these improved features work. Can we still set the house on fire?
Half-Life - 9.3 million copies sold
Developed by Valve, Half-Life is a science fiction, first person shooter game. Players have to combat and solve puzzles, while playing as Gordon Freeman and seeing the game through his eyes. Quite interesting and addictive video game. Most players agree it’s even better than its sequel, so if you want to try it, drop by on Steam site and try it.
Guild Wars - 6.5 million copies sold
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (RPG). Unlike other MMORPG games, the Guild Wars focused more on PvP (player vs. player) aspect than most other RPGs out there. Players use their 3D avatar to interact with the fantasy world Tyria. In Guild Wars players purchase episodes instead of subscriptions, which can be a downside if they encounter some items or areas which cannot be obtained unless they purchase other expansions.
That’s it, the top 10 best-selling PC video games ever. They all deserved their place on the charts, but it's surprising to see how popular life simulation games are.
