Few days ago Turkish Prime Minister started to fight social medias and country’s government blocked Twitter access for its people. The social network has been one of the most important communications tools for over 10 million users in Turkey and they are showing how it’s almost impossible to ban anything online.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave a statement last Thursday when the government ban on Twitter began “Everyone will see how powerful the state of the Republic of Turkey is”, though it was clear that users have many ways to access their favourite social media network.
Twitter users started accessing the network in various ways such as typing Google’s Domain Name System addresses (DNS) directly into a computer’s network settings, but the government blocked that as well. Then they unblocked it, though it is not the best way to avoid the ban.
Four days after the ban was introduced, Tor network usage is skyrocketing. Thanks to this media which allows anyone to anonymously browse and use Internet, people from around the world started the protest against Turkish government decision. Tor gained more than 10,000 new users just from Turkey.
Tor encrypts a user’s Internet traffic and bounces it around the world to various nodes, which means those who use it become virtually untraceable and more important, unblockable by authorities. The service has been used by activist, journalists and others who wished to hide their Internet usage. Tor can be downloaded for free and has been a vital service for Twitter users who disagree with their governments attempt to ban freedom of speech.
Even if they ban Tor website, there are dozens of mirrors available, making it the best service to access the Internet from anywhere. Although it has been used by other people who wanted to hide their location due to a dodgy activity.
