Google’s cloud application team is left short for a key member who went to join Snapchat messaging service. Peter Magnusson worked as an engineering director and ran the Google App Engine project that comprises of a set of tools for developers who want to build and run apps in Google Could.
His new title will be a vice president of engineering and company’s co-founder Bobby Murphy said they will continue to use Google App Engine. Although they are working on Snapchat’s own technology. ““We’ll continue to build out infrastructure to support our unique needs, and we’ll do that in part by leveraging as much of what Google and other service providers offer,” Murphy said to clarify earlier report that stated how Magnusson’s new job will “be building technology infrastructure in-house so that the company can begin to lessen its reliance on partners like Google.”
“A more correct statement is that we’ll continuously evaluate alternatives, and likely over time develop more infrastructure ourselves, in particular in specialized areas of our apps,” he added. “Google is a great partner,” Magnusson added “and the success of Snapchat would simply not have been possible without Google Cloud, and we expect to work closely together. Period.”
Snapchat plans to add up to 50 engineers to the company’s current team of 15 developers. Timothy Sehn, former Amazon engineering director, already joined in September, 2013. Three months later, Emily White who was the executive responsible for bringing ads to Instagram, joined Snapchat as the chief operating officer (CTO).
The main focus is a security since the recent data breach that exposed millions of phone numbers and user names. The company soon updated the messaging service allowing users to opt-out of connecting their phone numbers to user names.
