Be Another Lab created the next best thing since sliced bread. Their ender Swap experiment uses Oculus Rift headsets so participants can see the world through their partner’s eyes.
They staged a symmetrical set of two spaces which were identical, and by using the Oculus Rift partners virtually swapped bodies to see and feel the other person’s body through their own eyes. This is a brain illusion that many people dreamed of.
The experiment uses Machine To be Another (MTBA) system, an art installation developed with support from the Media lab Hangar and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The system uses a headset and a series of first-person cameras to create the illusion which lets one partner to see the things that are being recorded by the visor from the other partner.
The project has a goal to explore empathy and the nature of the self. "More than individuals, we are part of a social collective called humanity," the collective explained on its official site. "As members of this collective, the perception of our own identity is based on our relation with other people and our social environment: how people see us, how we do act and interact with them, and what self image we project to this society and to ourselves."
Couples agree on the synchronized movements such as hand gestures. These movements are being mimicked to create an illusion. The best one in the history. On top of that, if one partner starts talking of their thoughts, through headphones, it will generate a perception as if someone was speaking in other person’s mind.
"As part of this collective society, it is clear the importance of understanding the 'Other' and 'Each Other' to better understand ourselves. This artistic investigation plans to use the recent neuroscience approach of 'embodiment' and apply it to investigate the perception and comprehension about the Self based on the comprehension of the 'Other.'"
While its sounds cool to be able to see the world through the eyes of the opposite sex, the project also reveals what it feels like to be tall, short, or overweight. You can basically experience anything that your partner has to face on daily basis.
The only limitation within the experiment is that both partners have to follow the same movements, or the illusion is broken. However, it will most certainly change the way we see and behave in a relationship. Seeing the world through your partner’s eyes could give the answers to mysteries of the opposite sex. What do they think, how do they feel about certain things and how do they see you.
