Couple of weeks ago I started exploring the art of French Macaron making, simply due to a challenge it presents. I should mention at this point there has been an on-going argument between the Italians and French regarding the origin of these trendy cookies with Italy stating the cookie having been brought from Italy to France by Marie Antoinette. What a famous woman she was, related in one way or the other to some of the most famous food, being Macaron and Brioche.
These Cookies are Trendy
To us, mere mortals, it really doesn’t matter who did the first batch of Macarons. The only thing we want to know is how to prepare the world’s most wanted cookies in the right way. Whether to show off as a cool party host, serve them as a dessert or just selfishly eat them all ourselves, this is the trendiest dessert one can learn to bake. People have been eating them for centuries!
Since 2010 there has been a definite uptrend in people wanting to master the art of Macaron making which apparently is quite a long time for a food to stay trendy. They can be done in so many ways with colours and with different tastes, though the basic recipe is always the same. Egg whites, sugar and almonds. Sounds so simple, so where is the catch?
Well, it’s not that easy to prepare the perfect cookie. Baking is an art, nothing is ever so easy and simple. No matter what the recipe says I always get a little stuck when trying to make a new dessert for the first time. Christmas and New Year’s Eve are around the corner, and I so want to try baking this delicious cookies in the next few days. Whilst I’m not a beginner at making desserts, after reading various recipes it does seem like I’ll need some patience to do it right.
A good friend of mine from Norway, Egil, is a chef and he has given me a few tips to help me out. His most important advice is to make sure the bowl is completely clean and free of grease before adding egg whites in it and start whipping. Also, once you pipe Macarons on a baking tray, let them rest for half an hour before putting them in the oven. Whipping egg whites for these cookies seems to be the trickiest part, though reading some recipes it does look like whipping egg whites for Meringue. We’ll see soon enough.
Best Way to Make Macarons
There are so many recipes, so many tips, so many pastry chefs sharing their best way to make Macarons that it might be a daunting task trying to find the one you would like to follow. Even if you are good at baking desserts, you know that each recipe has to be done by measuring to perfection, setting the oven temperature right, and of course making it all with love helps a lot. I’ve found what looks like a good first basic starter Macaron recipe so I’ll go with it and hopefully have heavenly cookies in time for Christmas.
A few days ago I met a girl who attended a Macaron Making Course and she seemed to have so much fun with it. Who wouldn’t enjoy making the trendiest desserts right. She was so cheerful that I realised it must be due to the sweet-hype the poor girl suffered from taking the class. Monika has described her art of Macaron Making Experience in such a great fun way that I’m thinking of attending a course myself and see how a pro baker does it, unless of course I can master this delicate cookies on my own. It would be the best way to go and learn from a pro though. I do learn by seeing an example, and on top of that I’d be surrounded by those yummy cookies.
Why Should You Learn to Make Macarons
Being a party star requires doing something that no party host has done before, or at least not many have. Having a room full of guests and serving them colourful, delightful dessert would give you big bonus points.
You’re in a pub, having a night out and you want to chat up a girl but can’t come up with a line that’s not a cliché or lame. Imagine saying something in lines of “hey wanna try my homemade Macarons?” Now who could resist that, and I assure you not many guys have said that before. I know I’d fall for that one, hint KC.
You could be bored or need some extra income. By learning to make Macarons you could cater for parties and other gatherings, and earn few more pennies while doing something you like.
If you are like me, addicted to sweet food, making super sweet cookies could be the perfect way to always have delicious cookies ready when the craving kicks in.
Newbies or experts, anyone can make the perfect Trendy Macarons if shown the correct way. My path to perfecting cookies starts with following Egil’s advice and combining it with the above easy recipe. Then I will take the course and complete the road to perfection. Some say they are too sweet, to me there is no such thing as too sweet, the chocolate variety could prove to be my Holy Grail.
